World's first panther rehabilitation project:

The scientific name of the cheetah is 'Acinonyx jubatus' and it is a big cat found especially in the forests of Africa and Iran. It is the fastest animal on land, and has a running speed of 80 to 130 km/h. Cheetahs are listed as Vulnerable in the "International Union for Conservator of Nature (IUCN)" redlist.

Since cheetahs became extinct in 1952 due to excessive hunting activities in India. Therefore the Government of India started the Cheetah Rehabilitation Project in the year 2022.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on 17 September 2022 introduced 8 wild cheetahs into the Kuno National Park and launched the world's first Cheetah Rehabilitation Project. Cheetahs imported from the country of Namibia are being introduced to India under Project Cheetah, the world's first inter-continental large wild carnivore rehabilitation project. Of these 8 cheetahs, five are females and three are males.

The project is being implemented gradually after the Supreme Court allowed the central government to do so in January 2020.

During the 19th meeting of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), the Environment Ministry released the action plan for the introduction of Cheetah in India. Under this action plan, 50 African cheetahs from Namibia will be brought to India in the next 5 years. Presently, cheetahs were relocated to Kuno Palpur National Park in Madhya Pradesh during the first year.

NTCA also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) in August 2022 to relocate Cheetahs from Africa to India under the Cheetah Project. Under the MoU, IOC will provide a grant of Rs 50.2 crore over a period of 4 years for the Cheetah Rehabilitation Project. Presently the total cost of Cheetah Rehabilitation Project is 75 crores. IndianOil will also provide funds under its Corporate Social Responsibility.

Kuno National Park:

Kuno National Park was established in the year 1981 as a wildlife sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh and later in the year 2018 it was given the status of a national park. The park was named after the Kuno River, one of the major tributaries of the Chambal River.
